ROUSE MS 1 PROFESSION AND PRIVILEGE BOOK OF THE AUGUSTINIAN HERMITS
OF WINDSHEIM, GERMANY, 1393 TO 1462.
|
Each friar when he entered the Windsheim Priory
made his profession to the house and wrote it in Latin or German
in his own hand, normally following the formula, “I brother
Hans Hagen from Kulsheym…”. This was followed by the
oath of profession to the house, and occasionally by a designation
of what was being given to the house as dowry. The names and professions
of 31 brothers are given.

| The Windsheim profession book is in its original binding
of tawed hide over oak boards, with pastedowns in the front and back
from a fourteenth-century manuscript of sermons. Profession books
are not very common. This one offers the paleographer 31 dated and
localized examples of German vernacular script from the first half
of the fifteenth century. It provides, in addition, the place of origin
of each new member of the house, most of whom come from villages within
fifty miles of Windsheim. These villages constitute the geographical
hinterland of this house, a matter frequently difficult to discern
for medieval religious institutions, and would merit study. Like the
manuscript containing the Sermons of Henry of Freimar, this manuscript
is an archeological object from the mid-fifteenth century, untouched
by later additions and unchanged by rebinding.
