dgar Bowers published five collections of poetry: The Form of Loss (Alan Swallow, 1956); The Astronomers (Alan Swallow, 1965); Living Together (David R. Godine, 1973); For Louis Pasteur (Princeton University Press, 1989); and Collected Poems (Alfred A. Knopf, 1997).
In addition, Bowers published five limited edition chapbooks: Witnesses (The Symposium Press, 1981); Chaco Canyon (UC Santa Barbara, 1988); Walking the Line (Robert L. Barth, 1988); Thirteen Views of Santa Barbara (Occasional Works, 1989); and How We Came from Paris to Blois (Jacaranda Press, 1990).
Bowers’s poems have appeared in several notable anthologies, including Poets of the Pacific, Second Series, edited by Yvor Winters (Stanford University Press, 1949); New Poets of England and America, edited by Donald Hall, Robert Pack, and Louis Simpson (Meridian Books, 1957); Poets Choice, edited by Paul Engle and Joseph Langland (The Dial Press, 1962); Five American Poets, edited by Thom Gunn and Ted Hughes (Faber & Faber, 1963); The Vintage Book of Contemporary American Poetry, edited by J.D. McClatchy (Vintage Books, 1990); Word of Mouth: An Anthology of Gay American Poetry, edited by Timothy Liu (Talisman House, 2000); The Poetry Anthology, 1912-2002, edited by Joseph Parisi and Stephen Young (Ivan R. Dee, 2002), and Poets of World War II, edited by Harvey Shapiro (Library of America, 2003).
Bowers’s many awards included two Guggenheim Fellowships (1959 and 1969), the Brandeis Creative Arts Award (1984), and the Bollingen Prize in Poetry (1989). By winning the Bollingen Prize, Bowers joined the rarefied company of W.H. Auden, Robert Frost, Marianne Moore, and Wallace Stevens.
