UCLA Libraries Music Library Special Collections Archives Jazz

The UCLA Music Library is actively developing its Jazz archival collections in support of performance and research activities in the departments of Musicology and Ethnomusicology, among others. Current strengths are sound recordings, sheet music and photographs. Substantial recent gifts have included a core collection of monographs and reference books (André Chaves Collection), sheet music and photographs from the Estate of Ella Fitzgerald, the Bill Green archival collection, over 63,000 78rpm sound recordings from the Ray Avery Rare Records store in Glendale (George Hocutt Collection), the Horace Tapscott Archive, and the Howard Morehead Collection of photographs.

Jazz Archival Collections

  • André Chaves Collection
    Approx. 1150 books, including reference works (discographies, catalogs, guides, etc.); monographs on musicians, styles, institutions, places; jazz histories; literature with jazz themes; photographs. This collection forms the core of a research-oriented non-circulating Jazz Reference collection.

  • A&M Records Collection of business papers, sound recordings, music manuscripts, and memorabilia
    The collection consists of sound recordings, manuscript musical arrangements, photographs, correspondence, promotional materials, posters, gold albums, awards, books and ephemera from just prior to the company’s founding in 1962 through its sale to Polygram in 1989 and a few years thereafter, while Moss and Alpert were still affiliated with the label. The collection is in the midst of being procesed. The finding aid will be updated periodically.

  • Collection of Big Band Photographs
    Commercial publicity photographs of American dance bands, combo bands and singers, such as Ray Herback, Tiny Hill, Hoosier Hot Shots, Eddy Howard, Dick Jurgens, Gene Krupa, Jack Leonard, Light Crust Doughboys, Louise Massey and the Westerners, Frankie Masters, Ray Noble, Kate Smith, Alec Templeton, Orrin Tucker and Bonnie Baker, Horace Henderson, Eddy Duchin, Count Basie, Cab Calloway, Roy Acuff and his Smokey Mountain Boys, Gene Autry, Horace Heidt, Charlie Winninger, Benny Goodman's Sensational Swing Band, Paul Whiteman, and others.

  • Paul Tanner Collection of Jazz and Popular Music Sound Recordings
    The collection predominantly consists of commercial 78 rpm and 33 1/3 rpm (LP) disc recordings of jazz music, with some popular and ethnic music as well. Also included are a small number of 45 rpm discs, a few 16 inch transcription discs, a film and some film clips, as well as a separate collection of commercial and non-commercial recordings of the Glenn Miller Band, in which Tanner played trombone for a time.

    The collection consists of sound recordings, musical compositions and arrangements of Horace Tapscott and other composers, and the performances of the Pan Afrikan Peoples Arkestra and the Union of God's Musicians and Artists Ascension.   • Additional sound recordings
    The Archive of Popular American Music collections include large numbers of sound recordings of Jazz. Of particular note is an extensive collection of the Gennett label, including many early recordings of Louis Armstrong, Bix Beiderbecke, Hoagy Carmichael, Duke Ellington, Fletcher Henderson and Jelly Roll Morton.

Many other collections in Music Library Special Collections contain material pertaining to Jazz, including many film music and sheet music collections. Of particular importance is the Collection of Instrumental arrangements, ca. 1890-1965 in the Archive of Popular American Music.
