Shelly Manne Collection

Manne was born in New York, 11 June 1920; in 1942 he played in the big bands led by Will Bradley, Raymond Scott, and Les Brown; entered the US Coast Guard but continued some performances, including on Coleman Hawkins’s recording of The Man I Love (1943); from 1946 to 1952 Manne worked principally with Stan Kenton, but also with Johnny Bothwell, George Shearing, Charlie Ventura, Bill Harris, and Woody Herman, and toured with Jazz at the Philharmonic; settled in Northridge (Los Angeles); performed with Howard Rumsey's Lighthouse All Stars (1951–3) and Shorty Rogers (1953–4); recorded The Three (1954) with Rogers and Jimmy Giuffre; founded a quintet in 1955; was also a co-leader with Barney Kessel and Ray Brown of the Poll-Winners trio (1957–60, 1975) and a member of André Previn’s trio; from 1960 to 1974 he ran a jazz club, Shelly’s Manne-Hole, and from 1974 to 1977 he was a member of the L.A. four; in 1980 he toured Japan with the Gentlemen of Swing (Benny Carter, Harry Edison, Teddy Wilson, Milt Hinton) and a bop group (Dizzy Gillespie, Cal Tjader, Harold Land, Eddie “Lockjaw” Davis, Illinois Jacquet, Eddie Gomez, and Cedar Walton); he died in Los Angeles, 26 Sept 1984.

Collection consists of sound recordings, photographs, jazz magazines and journals, drumming method books, sheet music, books, tour itineraries, programs and fliers.
