Re: Mid-Year Report 2001/2002

Members of the 2001/2002 Committee on Programs were : Joan Flintoff LoPear, Chair (YRL Cataloging), Xia Chen (Law), Louise Spear (Ethnomusicology), and Bo-Gay Tong Salvador (LIS) Appointed in August 2002, this has been a great team to be working with during a very busy year.

On very short notice, the Program Committee set up a LAUC-LA "Lunch with LAUC Forum on the webpt/ERDB" for Thursday, September 6th at 12:00-1:00 in the YRL-ACR. After a brief presentation by the AULs; there was a lot of discussion between LAUC-LA members and the AULs regarding the Electronic Resources Database.

Reported previously in the 2000/2001 Annual report, by the previous year's Chair Catherine Brown, the 2001/2002 Committee actually helped Cathy plan and carry out the suggestion for a LAUC-LA program "What Have You Been Up To Lately? Projects and Research Sharing" on September 12, 2002 program. There was a great turnout to sharing recent activities by Bruce Whiteman, (Clark Library), David Hirsch, (YRL Bibliographers), Joan Flintoff LoPear, (YRL Cataloging), Michael Oppenheim, {Management}, Esther Grassian, (College), Barbara Schader, (Biomed), Lisa Kernan (Arts), and Joan Kaplowitz (Biomed). Marion Peters shared a poster session she had presented at SLA. There were requests to repeat a similar program in the future. The LAUC-LA Fall Membership Meeting/ New Librarians Reception was held on Thursday, November 8th, from 2:00-5:00 pm in the Sequoia Room of the UCLA Faculty Center. Debbie Murphy, LAUC President addressed the LAUC-LA membership. After this meeting it was discovered that it is not going to be possible in the future to provide lapel flowers for new librarians at future receptions. Therefore the new Program Committee will find it necessary to find another method to indicate who the new librarians at the reception are.

On Thursday, January 10th, 2002, LAUC-LA Program Committee hosted a joint trip with the LAUC-I Program Committee to the Hammer Museum's exhibit "The World from Here: Treasures of the Great Libraries of Los Angeles. LAUC-LA members already had the advantage of knowing how this exhibit was developed because of Bruce Whiteman's sharing at our September 12th program.

LAUC-LA organized and sponsored a March 6th , 4:00 pm Program on the Special Collections Acquisition of Susan Sontag's Papers held in YRL Special Collections. Victoria Steele shared with us all the interesting details on this acquisition of the papers of one of the best-known and most influential American writers. Several members asked if some future interesting meetings of this nature could be held a little earlier in the day so that van pool participants could also attend.

The LAUC-LA Program Committee showed Stanley Wilder's video "Generational Change in Librarianship at 2 brown bag lunches. One was at the Green Room (1230 Schonberg Music Building) and the second on April 9th (YRL West Electronic Media Classroom, 2nd floor YRL). These were held earlier in the day, and two times so that more members would be able to have input at subsequent LAUC meetings on this topic.

This brings us current with the planning of the LAUC-LA Spring Membership Meeting on April 25th, 2002, from 1:00-4:00 pm, in the UCLA Faculty Center Sequoia Room.
