LAUC-LA Peer Review Committee Mid-Year 2002 Report

MID-YEAR REPORT
LAUC-LA 2000/2001 Peer Review Committee

April 22, 2001

The 2001/2002 Peer Review Committee was constituted as of November 2001, with 33 members; currently there are 32, following one committee member's resignation from the library in March. The membership of the Peer Review Committee is posted on the LAUC-LA Web site at http://www.library.ucla.edu/committees/laucla/members/committees/01-02peer.htm.

On Friday, November 2nd, the Appointments and Peer Review Committee Orientation meeting took place, with Acting Human Resources Director Rita Scherrei joining me to speak to the new committee. (Rita also undertook the task of revising The Call, to reflect accurate wording in the versions now needed for represented and non-represented librarians.)

On Thursday, November 29th, the annual Orientation Meeting for New Librarians was held in the YRL Administrative Conference Room (YRL 11348). At this meeting, Gloria Werner shared her views on the purposes and processes of peer review.

The Peer Review Documentation Workshop was held on Tuesday, December 11th, in Room 111 in the GSEIS Building. The committee in charge of the workshop--Roberta Medford, George Wrenn, and Keri Botello, Chair--provided a thorough, lively, and helpfully personalized overview of the process of composing and presenting peer review documentation. This meeting was followed on Tuesday, December 18th, in the YRL Administrative Conference Room, by a Review Initiators' Workshop--the first to be held in some 7 or 8 years. At this event, also arranged by the tireless Keri Botello, Alison Bunting and Bob Bellanti spoke at length from their perspectives as an AUL and long-time RI, respectively. Among the many attendees was Rita Scherrei, who also contributed enlightening comments.

On February 25th, 2002, I met with Rita Scherrei and Pat Hawthorne, the Library's new Human Resources Director, to provide Pat with a detailed overview of peer review policies and processes.

To date, this year's dedicated and hard-working Peer Review Committee has completed 24 actions and 7 appointments; by the time the LAUC-LA Spring Membership Meeting takes place later this week, at least another 3 actions will have been completed. I am deeply indebted to the Committee members for their prompt responses to my calls to schedule meetings, and for the scrupulous care they take in their deliberations.

Respectfully submitted,

Michael Oppenheim
LAUC-LA Peer Review Coordinator 2001/2002
