LAUC-LA Executive Board Meeting

1. Call to order

The meeting was called to order at 1:08 pm.

2. Secretary's report

The April 22, 2008 Executive Board meeting minutes were approved as written.

3. Chair’s report (Sandstrom)

A mentoring lunch for new librarians is scheduled for June 6. Keri and 2-3 other LAUC-LA members will join 12 new librarians for the event.

Heidi, together with Keri and Cathy, shared highlights of the LAUC Spring Assembly and Executive Board meeting held at UC Irvine May 7-8. Updates on statewide activities include: streamlining the application process for LAUC research and professional development grants, development of an assessment survey by the statewide Diversity Committee, and efforts to further scholarly communication on campuses. UCOP has hired a consultant to help with their strategic planning given deep budget cuts: 20% decrease in spending and 23% in workforce. The LAUC bylaws revisions are still in limbo in the UCOP office.

4. Vice-Chair’s report (Botello)

The Mentoring Committee will be sponsoring a brown bag on June 3. Keri distributed notes from the May 8 LAUC Statewide Executive Board meeting, and reported that none of the campuses seem to know how their LAUC activities are budgeted or from what source(s). Keri has volunteered to develop a questionnaire for divisions to look into this situation.

5. Committee reports

Elections, CAPA, Research and Development, and Programs (Sandstrom for Kasianovitz, Kwan, Cheng and Tsiang)

Ballots have been successfully distributed for LAUC-LA and Statewide elections. CAPA is finishing its final reports, and intends to meet its end of June deadline. 13 people attended a recent brown bag event by the Research and Development Committee, where moderators led a brainstorming session for an actual research project. Keri will look into posting the Committee’s presentation on the LAUC-LA Web site. 54 attendees at the LAUC-LA Spring meeting, which included the moving reception for Patti Caravello, this year’s Librarian of the Year.

6. New business

Heidi and Keri will be meeting with Gary Strong on June 9.
