Notes

5xx field order
All note fields can be used for computer files.  Input the note fields in their prescribed order, based on the number of the corresponding rule in AACR2r.  Use the following as a quick guide, in conjunction with "Cataloging Internet Resources : a Manual and Practical Guide" (http://oclc.org/oclc/man/9256cat/toc.htm) and AACR2r, in particular, chapters 1, 9 and 12.
 
 
9.7B1a Nature and Scope (500, 516) An optional note in YRL Cataloging, the 516 provides information on the nature and scope of the material being described. The 516 supplies this information when it is not present in the rest of the bibliographic description.  In general, prefer the 516 note when cataloging computer files.  Construct the field using a general descriptor term, and adding more specific information enclosed in parenthesis.

9.7B1b System Requirements (538) This note indicates what computer is required, how much memory, any additional programs needed, and any other special peripherals which may be needed to access the information.  This note specifies a program or type of program needed for use with the file.  Begin each note with the words "System requirements:" 
538     System requirements: Adobe Acrobat Reader.
9.7B1c Mode of Access (538) A required note, this field should begin with the words "Mode of access:" 
538     Mode of access: World Wide Web.
9.7B2 Language/Script (546) 546     Text in French and English.
9.7B3 Source of the Title Proper (500) In this required note, record the source of the title proper.  Include a date viewed note as well.  Follow this model:
500     Title from home page (viewed Jan. 12, 2000).
9.7B4 Variations in Title (500) Use only to list filename.  Use 246 for other variations in title.
9.7B5 Parallel Titles and Other Title Information (500) Include important information not noted elsewhere on the bibliographic record.
9.7B6 Statements of Responsibility (500, 536, 550) Use to list any source not named in the 1XX field, but considered important enough to be named in an added entry.

9.7B7 Edition and History of the File (500, 522, 567) These fields give helpful information regarding the edition and history of the file (500), geographic coverage (522), and methodology (567).
9.7B8 File Characteristics (500, 565) Use for adding information about the file not noted elsewhere on the bibliographic record.
9.7B9 Publication, Distribution, Etc., Information (500)
 
This note lists information about a file's publication or distribution not noted elsewhere on the bibliographic record. A date of release or transmittal may be noted here as well.

9.7B10 Physical Description, Including Color or Sound (500) Use if information is not given elsewhere.
9.7B11 Accompanying Material Information (556) Use if documentation is available as a separate file.
9.7B12 Series Information (500) Record series information not included in the 4XX.
9.7B13 Dissertation Note (502)  
9.7B14 Intended Audience for the Item (521) Use if audience-specifice information is present on the item being cataloged.
9.7B15 Reference to Published Descriptions (510, 524, 581) Use 510 to note where the item has been cited, use 524 for the preferred citation, and use 581 for notes about the citation, or about publications based on the use of the item being cataloged.
9.7B16 Other Formats in which the Information is Available (530, 535) Give information about other formats for the same material being cataloged in the 530 field.  Use the 535 to note the location of originals or duplicates.

9.7B17 Summary (520) Use this field to provide a summary of the purpose and the content of the item.  This field is highly recommended when a useful note can be provided.
520     Searchable database of citations to American films from 1893 to 1970.
9.7B18 Contents (505, 500, 504) These fields provide a list of contents for the item being cataloged.  Use a 505 for a formalized contents note, a 500 for an informal contents note, and a 504 for bibliographic references. Note: prefer first indicator value 2 in a 505 field for an open record.
9.7B19 Numbers (500) Numbers which do not belong in another bibliographic field, but are still considered important, should be noted in this 500 field.
9.7B20 Copy Being Described, Library's Holdings, and Restrictions on Use (506, 583, 590) Use a 506 to record general restrictions on the use of the item, a 583 for notes about processing, and a 590 for local notes.
506     Access restricted to subscribers.
9.7B21 "With" Note (501) This field links two or more computer files that have no collective title and are cataloged separately.
9.7B22 Combined Notes Relating to the Original (534) This note is used to describe the original item being represented by the computer file.
