October 29, 2009: SPSS Upgraded

SPSS has been upgraded to version 18.0. Note that SPSS is now called PASW.

September 18, 2009: Lynda.com Free Trial

From Sept. 24 - Nov. 24, UCLA faculty, staff and students have free, unlimited access to all of the video-based technology training modules available at Lynda.com. Your computer must have a UCLA IP address or be configured to connect to campus via the VPN if connecting from off campus. To get started, visit http://iplogin.lynda.com.

September 14, 2009: Network Maintenance

Computers will be offline intermittently for network maintenance on Monday, September 14 between 8am and noon. We apologize for the inconvenience.

June 22, 2009: Upgrade Complete

Thank you for your patience while we upgraded the lab's facilities last week. You can find new computers with widescreen monitors in Bays 1-3. Software has been upgraded and added on all of the computers as well. Please let us know if you experience any problems and we will look in to it right away!

June 13, 2009 - June 21, 2009: TLC Lab Upgrade & Closures

The Biomedical Library will be closed on the weekends of June 13-14 and June 20-21. However, the Graduate Reading Room (GRR) will remain open and accessible. Only the TLC computers in the GRR will be accessible during the library closure.

The TLC lab will be closed starting Monday, June 15 for our yearly lab upgrade. We will re-open in sections as the upgrade progresses, however we cannot guarantee the lab will be available at all during the week of the upgrade.

February 23, 2009: Help Using EndNote and MS Word

Are you getting error messages when trying to use EndNote in Microsoft Word? If so, please try the following steps to repair the "Cite While You Write" EndNote functionality in Word.

-Open Microsoft Word
-Open the Tools menu and select Templates and Add-ins
-Uncheck the Add-ins that are currently checked
-Click the Add button
-In the Explorer window, browse to C:\Program Files\EndNote X1\Product-Support\CWYW
-Select the file named "EndNote Cwyw.dot" and click OK
-Make sure this file is checked and click OK

These steps should restore the EndNote X1 toolbar. If you continue having difficulty, please see the TLC Office for assistance.

February 4, 2009: SAS and SPSS Upgrades

SAS and SPSS have been upgraded to versions 9.2 and 17, respectively. Please report any issues you notice to the TLC staff and we will address them.

January 30, 2009 : Help Using SAS

[This is an update from the April 24, 2008 announcement below.]

Are you having problems in SAS accessing a file off your USB flash drive? This is because SAS runs on a remote server and needs the correct syntax to be able to "see" your flash drive. If your flash drive is E: then switch out E: with the following text, "\\tsclient\E\". Note there is no ":" in the command.

For example, let's say your file is this:

E:\Pub101\Study\dataset.sas

In SAS it should look like this:

\\tsclient\E\Pub101\Study\dataset.sas

To access a file in your My Documents folder, click the "Favorite Folders" icon in the Explorer section on the left-hand side of the SAS window.

January 7, 2009 - January 14, 2009: TLC Floor Waxing

Sections of the lab will close at 3pm and reopen by 11am the next morning as the TLC undergoes its yearly floor waxing. Thank you for your patience while we improve the floor.

December 24, 2008 - January 1, 2009: TLC Lab Closed

All campus libraries will be closed from December 24 to January 1, including the Biomedical Library. The TLC will be closed and inaccessible during this time.

October 21, 2008: TLC Restrooms

The TLC restrooms are now available for TLC users to use. The doors will remain locked. Please get the restroom key from Help Desk. Only TLC users are permitted to use the restrooms. Public restrooms are on the first floor.

If no one is at the Help Desk, please use the restrooms on the first floor.

September 19, 2008: New Chairs, Post Flyers in the TLC!

The TLC just installed an order of brand new chairs. Thank you for enduring the old ones for so long. We hope you enjoy the new comforts!

The display case in the stairwell outside the TLC is now available for lab users to post school-related flyers. Don't miss out--post your flyer where hundreds of people in your school are gauranteed to see it! See Alan in the TLC office if you would like to post.

September 8, 2008: Another New Group Study Room & Shockwave Player

We have added a 6th group study room with 3 PC computer workstations, and 1 whiteboard. Shockwave Player is now installed on all lab machines.

July 18 , 2008: New Group Study Room & Resources

We have added a 5th group study room with 3 PC computer workstations, 1 MAC OSX workstation, and 1 TV/VCR combo.

June 20 , 2008: Computer Upgrade

The TLC's yearly upgrade is now complete and the lab is open for use. Click here for a complete list of new software and hardware.

March 18, 2008: Using Heart Sounds Programs

Find links to the programs "Heart Sounds and Murmurs" and "Beyond Heart Sounds" in the Other Applications folder on your computer desktop. You can check out heart sounders at the TLC Help Desk during business hours. Please return heart sounders to the TLC staff in person when done.

January 31, 2008: Study Rooms Closed

The multimedia/study rooms in the lab will be closed from 3:00pm, Thursday January 31st until 11:00am, Friday February 1st for scheduled floor waxing.

December 7, 2007: "Available Computers" Map Updated

The "Available Computers in Labs" section of the website now displays all TLC computers (including Graduate Reading Room).

November 30, 2007: CD/DVD Recycling Program

Recycle your old CD/DVD disks by despositing them in the collection bin put out in the lab. The disks will go to Software Central for recycling.

November 6, 2007: SAS Genetics Module Added

SAS has been updated with the Genetics module.

October 30, 2007: TreeAge Software Added

TreeAge Pro has been added on all lab computers. Note that you should open TreeAge files in the program by clicking "File" and then "Open."

August 2, 2007: Using SAS

SAS can be found in the "Other Applications" folder on the desktop. Double-click on SAS.rdp Because SAS is running on a server, you will be asked to enter your TLC username and password. Your "My Documents" and any removable drives will be available. IMPORTANT! To run your SAS scripts from a removable drive (such as drive E:), you must type "\\tsclient\" before the drive name, for example: "\\tsclient\E\Scripts.sas"

June 22, 2007: New System Upgrades

Thirty-four new Dell Optiplex GX745s have been installed, and all software and the Pharos printing system have been updated. New nineteen-inch LCD monitors are currently on back order.
