In 1976, Dr. Salard Tapawong, Chairman of the Department of Anesthesiology of Siriraj Hospital, established an Acupuncture Unit at that hospital. In 1989, a group of medical personnel set up a multidisciplinary pain committee at the Ramathibudi Medical School Hospital and held monthly pain conferences. The IASP Thai Chapter [later then Thai Pain Society and now Thai Association for the Study of Pain] was launched after the 1990 pain workshop on Principles of Pain Diagnosis and Management by Michael Cousins (then IASP President) and John Loeser.
Since then, the Thai Chapter’s activities have included: scientific meetings; a collaboration with Mahidol University to set up a cancer pain treatment protocol (1991); a workshop on cancer pain and morphine (1991); quarterly meetings in Bangkok and nationwide lecture tours (since 1992); and the establishment of the quarterly Pain News newsletter (1990). At present, the Chapter counts more than 620 member in various specialties.
