Michael Cousins (5th IASP President, 1987-1990) and Sir Sydney Sunderland organized the first small meeting of the Australasian chapter of IASP in 1979 at Surfers Paradise in Queensland, with F.W.L. Kerr of the Mayo Clinic and Foundation as Guest Professor. Both Cousins and Sunderland were IASP councillors; John Bonica had also asked Cousins to be vice-president for the far-flung Pacific region. Only Aussies came to the Queensland meeting, but the second and third meetings drew many New Zealanders [NZ later formed its own chapter].
The 3rd meeting was at Cousins’ home institution, Flinders Medical Center in Adelaide, and featured John Liebeskind from UCLA as the guest speaker. Under the leadership of Cousins, Sunderland, and Issy Pilowsky of Adelaide, the Australian chapter has become one of the largest in IASP, with 686 members. IASP’s 6th World Congress on Pain was held in Adelaide in 1990.
